Signs of Potty-Training Readiness…

Fall is my favorite time to potty train. It's

often a time when kids are wearing cozy

clothing that's easier to get on and off making

the potty-training experience much less

challenging.

Obviously, the season is a great time but you're also looking for your child and

YOU to be ready for the potty-training experience. Here's are the signs for children

of potty-training readiness:

  • They're staying dry for longer periods of time

  • They follow simple directions

  • They can sit on the potty for short periods of time

  • Waking up from naps dry

  • Communicating that they need to go potty

  • Showing interest in the bathroom

  • Pulling at a wet or dirty diaper or knowing when they are going in their diaper

  • Can undress themselves

Here is what you need to be ready for the potty-training experience:

  • You have the time and energy to be patient with the potty-training experience.

  • You have some ideas on ways to make potty training fun and engaging.

  • You have low expectations for your child to make it to the potty every time.

  • You recognize the physiological, cognitive and emotional signs they are ready to go potty.

  • You are ready to give lots of praise and no punishments.

  • You have ways to ways to work through the frustration and stress of setbacks in potty training.
